March 2007

2007 is a major year in local politics for Park Place. Pittsburgh residences will elect a new council representative for our district 9, and we will elect a new Mayor. The first “election” is actually the primary in May, where candidates are selected to represent the parties. As many local democrats run unopposed, the primary is the only time individual voters may have options. As I get any information on other announced candidates, I will add it here. The listing below is what I have received so far from my inquiries to the local Democratic and Republican parties. After the primary, I will expand this to include any known declared and/or registered candidates.

GPPNA is collecting candidate information and will begin posting it here. Any candidate or other person my send email to admin@parkplaceblog.com to have information posted or linked to. We will link to campaign websites and publicize any events where the public can meet and/or speak with the candidates. We will try not as a rule, to publicize events that are primarily fund raisers, as our purpose is not to support specific candidates, but rather provide information.

A Message from Park Place Neighbor Josh Bellin

Dear Friends,

If you care about the environment (and I know you do!), you’ll want to be involved in this. On April 14, 2007, Step It Up 2007, a nationwide day of events dedicated to pressuring Congress to pass legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will be held. (See their website, http://stepitup2007.org/). I’ve decided to host a local event, and I need your help! The event, which I’m calling the Park Place Climate Action Rally, will be held from noon to 2:00 on April 14th at lower Frick Park (corner of Forbes and S. Braddock). Plans are still in flux, but I’m hoping to have a rally, letter-writing campaign, information booths, and (for families) a park clean-up. Here’s how you can help:

  1. Obviously, attend the event yourself, and bring as many friends, family members, and co-workers as possible!

  2. Spread the word! In your workplace, your place of worship, your email address book, get the news out to as many people as you can think of. I’ll be putting together flyers in the next couple days, so if you can think of good places to distribute them, please let me know.

  3. Volunteer to help with planning, set-up, clean-up, etc.  There’s a lot to do–contacting local media, organizations, and politicians; posting flyers; making signs and banners; and so on–and only a month to do iit. So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please be back in touch to let me know if you have any thoughts about this or if you’d like to help. And thanks to all of you in advance for supporting this truly earth-shaking cause!  Josh Bellin jclj@juno.com
