Hello dear neighbors:
As you know, Park Place and environs is enduring yet another seasonal crime spree. I recently heard some noise out my bedroom window at about 2AM and looked out to see a man walking down the alley checking garage doors. He managed to lift up one about a foot and leaned down to look in with a flashlight. I called the police and reported it and a cruiser came down the alley within 10 minutes of my call.
Unfortunately, the reports are getting a little more grave--in addition to hearing from someone who lives further into Wilkinsburg that they too have been experiencing a number of break-ins, a reader just sent in the following report (paraphrased):
On Wednesday, July 7th, a very dark complected black man in his late teens entered the home of an older, disabled woman on Savannah Avenue through an unlocked door. She had been sleeping on the couch and woke up to find him sitting beside her. He made a lewd remark, and she yelled for help, whereupon he ran. This was the same young man that 3 years earlier had also sexually assaulted her and another neighbor, both older woman. She has called the police and there is an investigation underway.
PLEASE keep your doors locked and your valuables out of sight. We don't want to become a neighborhood imprisoned by fear, but neither can we ignore the fact that people can and do walk into people's homes and snatch unattended items from yards, porches, etc. Sure, if someone wants in, they'll get in, but as with the guy casing garages on Flotilla and the kids circling the neighborhood demonstrate--criminals are going to go for the low-hanging fruit when they can, so please protect your property and yourselves and continue to report all suspiscious activity to the authorities.
I'm also including a reminder about the Community meeting on Wednesday to further discuss the Environmental Charter School's plan to convert Park Place School back into a school. There are important traffic and parking issues that will impact the neighborhood, so please go if you can.
Be well, be safe, and take care of one another.

2ND COMMUNITY MTG. RE: CONVERSION OF PARK PLACE SCHOOL TO ENVIRO. CHARTER SCHOOL
A second community meeting will be held at 6:30pm on July 14th at Waverly Presbyterian Church (corner of Forbes & S. Braddock) regarding the proposed reuse of the old Park Place School as the future ECS K-3 site.
In order to fulfill their charter as a K-8 school, the Frick Environmental Charter School is interested in purchasing the Park Place School building and using it for their K-3 classes. They are hosting a community meetings to discuss neighborhood concerns, particularly regarding parking and traffic.
