REFUSE & RECYCLING SCHEDULE & INFO

The City has finally seen fit to post the 2012 refuse & recycling collection schedule. I'm not sure if any have been mailed out or not, since notoriously they only send one per building. Landlords are responsible for conveying this information to tenants.

Since today is a holiday, our trash and recycling will be picked up tomorrow, Tuesday, January 17.

Some general reminders:

  • Trash and recycling are not supposed to be put out before 6PM the night before pick-up.
  • If you put your recycling out on the wrong day, please don’t leave it out all week. It looks trashy and often ends up as trash/litter because it blows all over the place.
  • Curbside recycling is single-stream, meaning you can put all of the following materials into either blue bags or a clearly marked recycling container:
    • Plastic marked with a recycling arrow triangle that has #1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 in the center
      • includes frozen food bags, plastic shopping bags, most soda and food containers
      • does NOT include Styrofoam nor many brittle plastic clamshell or take-out containers that are usually #6 or #7
    • Glass
    • Metal Containers (including aerosol cans)
    • Newspapers
    • Magazines, Catalogs & Paperboard
      • includes cereal boxes; TP/paper towel rolls; Kleenex boxes; pasta and frozen dinner boxes; paper milk cartons, & aspetic boxes*, e.g. for soup and other "shelf-stable" liquids
    • White office paper
    • Junk Mail and Hardcover Books
    • Phone Books
  • Corrogated cardboard must be flattened and tied or flattened and bundled into boxes separately

* I called to confirm this. For more info about what items are recyclable see  Recycling & Refuse Collection Guidelines: http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/pw/assets/12-refuse-recycling-collection-guidelines.pdf

Drop-off Recycling

Ever wonder why, if we have single-stream recycling, you still need to separate recyclables when you take them to a drop-off center? Here’s your answer from Shawn Wigle, Recycling Supervisor for the City of Pittsburgh:

Construction Junction Recycling Drop-Off

The City of Pittsburgh requires residents to separate recycling as listed at each recycling drop-off. Yes, at times you may see the recycling truck mixing different materials together as a single stream load. This is an option that we can use in order to keep up with the high volume of material. However; based on the changing recycling markets and our processing contracts, this may not always be the best option and we will again take the different materials as separate loads. If at any time we make a change in this policy, updated signage will be posted at the drop-offs.

Please help us keep the drop-offs clean. Do not leave loose material on the ground or outside of the gate if the drop-off is closed. Also, please be sure to breakdown all cardboard boxes. Styrofoam packaging materials are not recyclable through the City program and should be disposed of properly before bring the boxes to the drop-off. Last but not least, the drop-offs are for recyclable materials only. If you see anyone illegally dumping other materials please call the Recycling Division at 412-255-2631 with a description of the vehicle and the licenses plate number.

Thank you for recycling.
